Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon review

Disclaimer: It's been a long time since I did any reviews so this might not be that good

"Infinity" is the first of Sherrilyn Kenyon's 14 books spanning new series called "Chronicles of Nick". So far, there has been 6 books published in the series. The series sets in Ms.Kenyon's Dark-Hunters universe, the same universe where her other works, "The Dark-Hunters" series also takes place. As a standalone spin-off to "Dark Hunters" series, you don't need to read any of the "Dark-Hunters" books beforehand to understand the story in "Infinity", but it would be advisable to do it as some characters from "Dark-Hunters" do appear in "Infinity"

The book revolves around the life of Nick Gautier, a 14 year old smart mouthed Cajun living with his mother, Cherise Gautier in a not-so-glamorous suburb of New Orleans. Cherise works as an exotic dance in a club in Bourbon and Nick goes to an elite private school called St.Richards. Nick has never had a good life. His family is poor, his father is a felon and Nick is being constantly bullied by his classmates. But it seems that his life is about to make a quick left turn when he meets a man after he gets into trouble during a night out with his friends. That man is Kyrian Hunters

As a big fan of the urban fantasy genre, the book has everything I want. From vampires to werewolves to zombies, add all of that to a snarky teenage boy and you have the recipe for a very fun book. Before reading the book, I was excited and after reading it, I was left not thoroughly disappointed. The story follows a very linear plotline that is common for most young adult fantasy: the hero is introduced (usually from an unfortunate background), the hero gets into trouble and meets the mentor, the hero discovers his powers, the hero encounters his enemies, the final fight happens and the hero saves the day. While this mapped out route might be a bit too plain and uninteresting, Ms.Kenyon's "Infinity" added her own flare by putting very interesting ensemble of characters to spice things up. It keeps the readers from closing the book as the interaction between characters makes up for the lack of branching storyline.

"Infinity" is the book that introduced me to the world of Dark-Hunters. It was also the first Sherrilyn Kenyon book that I've ever read. Just like Nick Gautier, I had no idea of the universe in book. In a way, I can relate to Nick and his reaction towards things that are happening around him, a fish out of water

Sherrilyn Kenyon's "Infinity" is a good, if not great, introduction to a new series. It gives us another taste of the Dark-Hunters universe, a less mature and more fun setting. Unfortunate how many Goodreads users gave this book low scores, I didn't think it was that bad. Hopefully the second book will be as good, if not better than this
